    Rigorous Calculations of Non-Abelian Statistics in the Kitaev Honeycomb Model

    We develop a rigorous and highly accurate technique for calculation of the Berry phase in systems with a quadratic Hamiltonian within the context of the Kitaev honeycomb lattice model. The method is based on the recently found solution of the model which uses the Jordan-Wigner-type fermionization in an exact effective spin-hardcore boson representation. We specifically simulate the braiding of two non-Abelian vortices (anyons) in a four vortex system characterized by a two-fold degenerate ground state. The result of the braiding is the non-Abelian Berry matrix which is in excellent agreement with the predictions of the effective field theory. The most precise results of our simulation are characterized by an error on the order of 10510^{-5} or lower. We observe exponential decay of the error with the distance between vortices, studied in the range from one to nine plaquettes. We also study its correlation with the involved energy gaps and provide preliminary analysis of the relevant adiabaticity conditions. The work allows to investigate the Berry phase in other lattice models including the Yao-Kivelson model and particularly the square-octagon model. It also opens the possibility of studying the Berry phase under non-adiabatic and other effects which may constitute important sources of errors in topological quantum computation.Comment: 27 pages, 9 figures, 3 appendice

Adnan Menderes Üniversitesi Veteriner Fakültesi Uygulama ve Araştırma Hastanesi’ne, 2,5 yaşlı kısırlaştırılmış, melez ırk dişi köpek bir haftadan beri devam eden abdominal ağrı, abdominal distensiyon, kusma, iştahsızlık, güçsüzlük ve yumuşak pis kokulu dışkılama şikayeti ile getirildi. Anamnez ve klinik semptomlar temelinde abdominal bir kitle veya akut pankreatitisden şüphelenildi, radyolojik ve ultrasonografik bulgular abdominal kitle şüphesini güçlendirdi. Üç günlük semptomatik ve destekleyici tedavi, hastada herhangi bir iyileşme sağlamadı. Sonrasında deneysel laparotomi ile gauzoma ve lokal peritonitis tanısı kesinleştirildi. Malasef köpek operasyon sırasında ex oldu. Hasta sahibi, köpeğe 1,5 yıl önce özel bir klinikte overiyohisterektomi yapıldığını bildirdi. Sonuç olarak, önceden ovariyohisterektomi uygulanmış, abdominal ağrı ve distensiyonun eşlik ettiği anormal kitleli dişi köpeklerde ayırıcı tanıda unutulmuş cerrahi spanç dikkate alınmalıdır.In this report, we present a case of gauzoma after ovariohysterectomy in a dog. A 2.5-year-old spayed female crossbred dog was referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Adnan Menderes University, with a seven-day history of abdominal pain, abdominal distension, vomiting, inappetence, weakness, and soft foul-smelling stool. Based on anamnesis and clinical symptoms, an abdominal mass or acute pancreatitis was suspected, radiographic and ultrasonographic findings strengthened the suspicion of an abdominal mass. Symptomatic and supportive treatment for three days did not provide any improvement. Gauzoma and localised peritonitis were finally diagnosed by the exploratory laparotomy. Unfortunately, the dog died during laparotomy. The owner noted that the dog had been overiohysterectomized in a private clinic 1.5 years ago. In conclusion, retained surgical sponge should be considered in the differential diagnosis of bitches with abnormal mass together with abdominal pain and distension which had previously been spayed

    Orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) EST and SSR marker development, annotation, and transferability

    Orchardgrass, or cocksfoot [Dactylis glomerata (L.)], has been naturalized on nearly every continent and is a commonly used species for forage and hay production. All major cultivated varieties of orchardgrass are autotetraploid, and few tools or information are available for functional and comparative genetic analyses and improvement of the species. To improve the genetic resources for orchardgrass, we have developed an EST library and SSR markers from salt, drought, and cold stressed tissues. The ESTs were bi-directionally sequenced from clones and combined into 17,373 unigenes. Unigenes were annotated based on putative orthology to genes from rice, Triticeae grasses, other Poaceae, Arabidopsis, and the non-redundant database of the NCBI. Of 1,162 SSR markers developed, approximately 80% showed amplification products across a set of orchardgrass germplasm, and 40% across related Festuca and Lolium species. When orchardgrass subspecies were genotyped using 33 SSR markers their within-accession similarity values ranged from 0.44 to 0.71, with Mediterranean accessions having a higher similarity. The total number of genotyped bands was greater for tetraploid accessions compared to diploid accessions. Clustering analysis indicated grouping of Mediterranean subspecies and central Asian subspecies, while the D. glomerata ssp. aschersoniana was closest related to three cultivated varieties

    Short-Term Pain and Long-Term Gain: Using Phased-In Minimum Size Limits to Rebuild Stocks-the Pacific Bluefin Tuna Example

    Like many stocks, the Pacific Bluefin Tuna Thunnus orientalis has been considerably depleted. High exploitation rates on very young fish have reduced the spawning stock biomass (SSB) to 2.6% of the unexploited level. We provide a framework for exploring potential benefits of minimum size regulations as a mechanism for rebuilding stocks, and we illustrate the approach using simulations patterned after Pacific Bluefin Tuna dynamics. We attempt to mitigate short-term losses in yield by considering a phased-in management strategy. With this approach, the minimum size limit (MSL) is gradually increased as biomass rebuilds, giving fishing communities time to adjust to new restrictions. We estimated short- and long-term effects of different MSLs on yield and biomass by using data from the 2016 assessment. A variety of scenarios was considered for growth compensation, discard mortality, and interest rates. The long-term value of the fishery was maximized by setting an MSL of 92 cm FL, which resulted in a 70% loss in yield during the first year (short-term pain). By implementing the MSL in two phases (64 cm FL in year 1; 92 cm FL in subsequent years), the long-term value of the fishery was maintained, and the short-term pain was reduced to a maximum 46% loss in yield during any 1 year. Under a three-phase implementation (55 cm FL in year 1; 77 cm FL in year 2; and 92 cm FL in subsequent years), the short-term pain was further reduced to a maximum loss of 30% during any 1 year. With no discard mortality, long-term yield increased by 165% and SSB increased 13-fold (to 33% of virgin SSB), regardless of the number of phases used. Long-term benefits were quickly diminished with increasing discard mortality. This simulation approach is widely applicable to cases where minimum size changes are contemplated; for Pacific Bluefin Tuna, our simulations demonstrate that size limits should be considered

    International audienceWe characterize supramolecular magnetic structures, consisting of two weakly coupled antiferromagnetic rings, by low-temperature specific heat, susceptibility, magnetization and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements. Intra- and inter-ring interactions are modeled through a microscopic spin-Hamiltonian approach that reproduces all the experimental data quantitatively and legitimates the use of an effective two-qubit picture.     Reverse Engineering Gene Networks with ANN: Variability in Network Inference Algorithms

    Motivation :Reconstructing the topology of a gene regulatory network is one of the key tasks in systems biology. Despite of the wide variety of proposed methods, very little work has been dedicated to the assessment of their stability properties. Here we present a methodical comparison of the performance of a novel method (RegnANN) for gene network inference based on multilayer perceptrons with three reference algorithms (ARACNE, CLR, KELLER), focussing our analysis on the prediction variability induced by both the network intrinsic structure and the available data. Results: The extensive evaluation on both synthetic data and a selection of gene modules of "Escherichia coli" indicates that all the algorithms suffer of instability and variability issues with regards to the reconstruction of the topology of the network. This instability makes objectively very hard the task of establishing which method performs best. Nevertheless, RegnANN shows MCC scores that compare very favorably with all the other inference methods tested.
